Two killed after plane bursts into flames

Police and rescue workers have cordoned off the scene of a light aircraft crash in northern KwaZulu-Natal which claimed the lives of two people on Thursday. Zama Khumalo‚ a Jozini traffic officer who is on scene‚ said the plane crashed in Emakhonyeni at about midday‚ narrowly missing a cluster of homes. She said a councillor from the area was alerted to the accident by residents after the two-seater crashed and burst into flames. The councillor called emergency services. “Unfortunately no one was able to help the people in the plane and we can only say that there were two people inside.” Khumalo said the wreckage was so severe that they were unable to identify the occupants or the registration of the aircraft. “At this stage we can’t identify who the plane belongs to so we are waiting for the officials from Richards Bay to retrieve the plane’s black box.” SA Civil Aviation authority investigator Frans Motaung said they were contacted by police at the scene and two investigators had been dispatched to Pongola. - TMG Digital/Durban Newsroom
