Man shot, killed at Arlington Tip

A MUCH-LOVED Walmer resident was gunned down on Friday at the Arlington tip, where he operated a scrap metal dealership.

Themba Williams, 73, affectionately known as “Uncle”, died shortly after he was shot by one of four assailants as he drove out of the tip premises in his silver Mercedes-Benz at about 2pm.

Police said the motive appeared to have been robbery. This was the second shooting incident at the tip in less than a year. In July, two security guards were shot and wounded during a robbery.

Family and friends of Williams who arrived on the scene were too traumatised to speak and clung to each other, sobbing.

The elderly man appeared to have desperately tried to escape his attackers by speeding out of the yard where he was shot. Tragically, he crashed into a traffic light just metres away. It is not clear how many times Williams was shot. He died on the scene.

A group of people working in and around the tip stared in horror at his body, which lay slumped in the driver’s seat. The car’s passenger windows were smashed.
