Picture: TimesLIVE[/caption] TWO people were killed last night and 34 seriously injured when an Intercape bus was petrol-bombed in The Strand, near Cape Town. Police spokesperson, constable Noloyiso Rwexana, said the bomb was thrown at the bus at 7:45pm last night.

The deceased men were sitting on the upper level and could not escape the burning bus which was transporting 43 people at the time.

City of Cape Town's Safety and Security Mayco member JP Smith said: "This is too horrible for words. Somewhere a mother, child or wife is waiting for these two men to come home."

The bus driver who escaped with minor injuries explained to paramedics that three 'petrol bombs' hit the bus, according to the ER24 website.

Patients were being treated at the nearby hospital Strand Provincial Hospital.

The City of Cape Town said the attack was mounted in Onverwacht Road.

''At this stage the reason behind this callous act is still unknown,'' said the acting executive mayor,  Brett Herron.

Herron thanked the emergency services and the police for their swift action and appealed to them ''to work tirelessly until those responsible are arrested and prosecuted''.

Police are investigating charges of murder and attempted murder. No one has been arrested in connection yet.

Intercape is the largest intercity passenger transport service in the country.
