Councillor fired following controversial trip to China

Nelson Mandela Bay councillor Thembinkosi Mafana has been fired from the city's mayoral committee following his controversial trip to China, The Herald learned on Monday (16/03/15).

Mafana has been fired from the Mayoral Committee, not as a councillor, and mayor Ben Fihla gave Mafana his letter today relieving him of his duties with immediate effect.

Fihla and city manager Mpilo Mbambisa have for two weeks dodged questions about Mafana’s controversial trip to China. There is widespread, growing speculation that whatever documents Mafana signed with the Chinese could not only embarrass the city, but potentially affect its diplomatic relations with one of the country’s key trade partners.
