Learn-to-swim pool proposed to curb deaths

IN a bid to curb drownings and encourage water safety, Nelson Mandela Bay Aquatics wants to build a training pool in Motherwell so that about 5000children and also adults can learn to swim.
Although the metro had built a 50m pool at the Motherwell Sports Centre, NMB Aquatics said it was not conducive to train first-time swimmers because it was too deep.
NMB Aquatics president Tony Stottelaar said building a new "learn-to-swim" pool and installing solar panels to ensure it was heated throughout the year would cost about R5-million.
Transnet has committed R1-million towards the initiative and R950000 has already been funded by the National Lottery. - Rochelle de Kock
