Reprieve for kleptomaniac

A KLEPTOMANIAC school teacher with seven convictions for theft was granted another reprieve yesterday when the Grahamstown High Court set aside her prison term and instead sentenced her to correctional supervision.

Marina Murray, 33, a Grade 6 teacher at Victoria Park Grey Primary School, was sentenced to three years' imprisonment in the Port Elizabeth District Court in November despite extensive evidence by the defence on her rare psychological illness.

Murray – who was nabbed for shoplifting at least seven times between 2004 and 2010 – escaped a term of imprisonment each time. Each incident involved the theft of petty items. - Kathryn Kimberley
