Prisoner had to mopup'evidence

A PRISONER said he had to clean up blood and faeces scattered across the maximum-security section after inmates were allegedly tortured by warders during a lockdown of St Albans Prison in 2005.

Ahmed Patel, who has since been released, told the Port Elizabeth High Court some prisoners were even sexually assaulted with the warders' batons.

"The [inmates] were squealing like pigs giving birth," Patel said. "They were not treated like humans."

He gave a graphic account of the brutal manner in which St Albans warders allegedly assaulted the prisoners continuously for six days. - Kathryn Kimberley
