Fans to get paid out after T20 match abandoned

DESPITE yesterday's heavy downpours, nearly 3000 cricket fans turned up at Axxess St George's in Port Elizabeth for the T20 match between South Africa and Australia.

The match, which was called off an hour after it was meant to start, was to be the first of a three- match series between the fierce rivals.

Supporters poured into the stadium and filled the stands, drinking hot chocolate and coffee while waiting for groundsmen and the umpires to inspect the pitch and make a decision.

Between 2pm and 3pm things looked promising when the rain stopped for a while and the covers were removed from the pitch.

Fans started chanting excitedly in the stands – but a heavy downpour began just after 3pm, forcing officials to call off the match.  -
