Plan to change more place names

IT IS now up to the Minister of Arts and Culture to decide whether to change the name of one of East London's most popular suburbs, Gonubie, to Qunube.

Gonubie Ratepayers' Forum chairman André Swart said he was not happy with the idea, mentioning the costs linked to the process.

"Why change the name? It is a waste of time and money to go change everything."

Proposals have already been submitted to Minister Paul Mashatile, and if he agrees to gazette the proposed name changes, Komga will be officially known as Qumrha, and Nahoon River and Dam will become Nxarhuni.

Chairman of the Nahoon Ratepayers' Association Colin Cockcroft said they were against the proposed change from Nahoon to Nxarhuni.

The Eastern Cape Provincial Geographic Names Committee last week revealed the process to change names such as East London, to either Gompo or Monti, King William's Town to Qonce, Grahamstown to Rhini, and Queenstown to Kukomani would take a bit longer. – Asanda Nini
