Rotary installs water tanks

BRIGHT green water tanks are springing up like mushrooms all over Station Hill, erected next to the homes of needy people as selected from the indigent list.
The project is a partnership between the Rotary Clubs of Port Alfred, the German Rotary Club of Cloppenburg–Quackenbrück and the Lower Saxony Bingo Environmental Foundation.
In addition to its mandatory public duties in Germany the foundation supports environmental and nature conservation projects for development cooperation and historic preservation. The foundation promotes sustainability, volunteering and active conservation.

The project started during October and the last tank was installed during mid-February. Under the guidance of Rotarian Neville Henley and builder Albert Nelson, the team of 12 worked quickly and efficiently.
The project is making a big difference to the community as a whole and many dwellings now have access to clean water. A 76 year-old resident, known only as Samuel, was so overwhelmed he sat looking at his new tank the entire first day after it was installed at his house.
The Rotary Club of Port Alfred endeavours to seek further funding to assist the community of Station Hill. During 2009 Rotary had already installed 100 water tanks at schools and crèches in the greater Port Alfred area.
