THE Bathurst Business Forum (BBF) voted for a new committee at the Pig and Whistle conference room last week.

Coordinator Aubrey Zeeman said that the BBF, whose aim was to promote Bathurst and its businesses, was due to get off the ground again.

Richard Luce, who was previously only a member and is now part of the new committee, said that in tough economic times a business forum was more important than ever.

"There are three types of businesses in Bathurst - hospitality, retail and services. These are all highly dependent on consumer spending,” he said.

He said encouraging tourism and growing the residential population are two ways this can be achieved. He suggested learning from other small towns and what they do to promote themselves.

Luce suggested ways in which Bathurst could be marketed. This included using the Bathurst website, social networks like Facebook and Twitter, making sure events were well co-ordinated, and education and training.

The new committee consists of Luce, Zeeman, Hans van den Nouweland, Tina Piek, Tanya Schenk and Gavin Came. They will vote on executive positions and portfolios at a future date.
