A CARPENTER is an extremely skilled craftsman with and experience level greater than a labourer.
Carpenters are highly sought after due to being required at almost every construction site. Carpentry can be divided into two main sections:
Construction Carpentry
The carpenter erects steel or timber formwork for multistory buildings, bridges, culverts, dams and reservoirs
Finishing Carpentry
The carpenter is responsible for the erection of roof trusses, the cladding of roofs, fixing of different types of ceilings and cornices, hanging of doors and fitting of skirtings.
Apprenticeship Training:
To become a carpenter, register with an employer providing suitable training
Training consists of theoretical and practical work:
Theoretical Training – at a technical FET College to obtain institutional Competency Based Modular Training
Practical Training – practical site experience with an employer
Duration of the course – 2 to 4 years depending on the experience of the candidate
Final examination: A compulsory Trade Test set by the Labour Department to qualify as an artisan.
Possible employers: Government and private businesses.
