Bay talent to the fore in concert of young and old musicians

The Port Elizabeth Music Society is drawing on Bay talent for an evening at the NMU south campus auditorium on Thursday, August 16.
Society president Dr Erika Bothma said she tried to include a wide variety of music genres and instruments, with participants ranging in age from 10 to in the 70s, including fresh and new faces and groups.
“On this special evening, you will have the privilege to hear the Nelson Mandela University String Ensemble with leader violinist and NMU lecturer David Bester. They will play a Concerto Grosso by Corelli,” said Bothma.
Elbe Coetzee from Westering High School will bring her award-winning group Treble Tonez, which is a singing group of 25 high school girls.
Representing the brass instruments, Pearson lecturer Tanya Leurquain will join Sonya Leurquain-Steyn in the Devil’s Waltz by Steven Verhelst for two bass trombones.
“One of the surprises of the evening will definitely be a rock group with the name of Asylum for the Sane, the members are all in Grade 6 in Summerwood Primary School,” Bothma said. “They are definitely going to rock your world!”
This group consists of are Xavier Brand on vocals and keyboards, Xavier Binsbergen on lead guitar, Nina Wedderburn on rhythm guitar, Dayan de Bruyn on bass guitar and Jordan Barr on drums.
The first half will end with NMU’s Prof Langpiet de Villiers playing a few of his own compositions on the consertina.
After the interval Bester will be joined by Elmarie van der Vyver, new viola and violin teacher at Alexander Road High School, in a Chaconne by Handel-Halvorsen.
Schubert’s Shepherd on the Rocks will be next on the programme.
“In this performance you will hear three very talented teachers from Collegiate Girls High School namely Nicolette Fyvie on piano, soprano Liske Hemingway and Grant Snyman on the clarinet.”
Three young NMU piano students will perform romantic piano music: Joshua Bussy will play Widmung by Schumann-Liszt, Lara Potgieter will play Fruhlingsnacht also by Schumann-Liszt and Berenice Pretorius will play the first movement from Grieg’s Piano Sonata Op 7.
Last but not least, said Bothma, the concert would end with a surprise item “that will send you home with a heart filled with joy and a smile on your face!”
The concert will start at 7.30pm and tickets are on sale on the night at R95 for adults, R80 for pensioners, R40 for students and R35 for school pupils.
