Philips stars for St Andrew’s
Bruce Philips scored a fine hundred as St Andrew’s beat Grey High by 18 runs in their 50-over schools cricket encounter at the weekend. Grey won the toss and decided to bowl first. They made early inroads into the St Andre w’s batting lineup, having them 11/2 after three overs. St Andrews’s dug their heels in and reached 103/3 at the drinks break. Philips batted superbly scoring a chanceless century as St Andrew’s ended on a respectable 231/7. The only Grey bowler to get among the wickets was Campbell de Wet with 4/46. The Grey innings did not get off to a good start, losing Ben Dryden first ball and two rash shots played by senior players left Grey in trouble at 46/3. Jarryd Lookwhy and Tristan Stubbs then batted sensibly, knocking the ball around and keeping the scoreboard moving. They put on 104 for the fourth wicket, but then both fell in quick succession with poor shots leaving Grey in trouble. Stubbs was out for 41 and Lookwhy for 69. With more wickets falling, Grey still needed 56 runs from 10 overs. The Grey lower order panicked and were bowled out in the last over for 213. ❑❑❑ GRAEME College made it seven consecutive victories this term after beating Alex, but they will not be pleased with their performance. In a match that neither team would be overly pleased with, Alex put up a defendable score of 142 on a tricky surface largely due to a good innings by Garth van Antwerpen (46), and some inconsistent bowling from Graeme. Liam Agnew, on debut for Graeme, picked up 3/26. In reply, Graeme got to off to a steady start, but then lost three of their top-order batsmen with plenty to do still. Eventually, Graeme found some form of quality cricket, with a flawless, unbeaten partnership between Romario Fritz (47 no) and Mark Amm (44 no). They put on 70 for the fourth wicket to take Graeme to a scrappy seven-wicket victory. The Graeme 2nd XI scored 236, despite being bowled out in the 35th over. Stefan Botha scored 73 and Mijean Annandale 46. In reply, Alex were 76 all out, with Donovan Brits taking 5/7 and Siya Hashe taking 3/24. Graeme won by 160 runs. Unfortunately, Alex were not at their best in the U15A game and came up against Lakhanya Sam who has been superb this term. He produced amazing figures of 5/6, which Alex could not recover from, and were dismissed for 26. Graeme won by nine wickets. In the U14A game, Alex were bowled out for 131 with Sonqoba Makalima doing most of the damage, claiming 5/26. He was also influential in the run chase, scoring 33, along with Garwin Dampies, who showed his class with another unbeaten halfcentury. Graeme went on to win by eight wickets.
