Tomorrow Stars dent Subs' hopes after 3-2 upset victory

TOMORROW Stars cannot win the Safa-NMB SAB League title from their current position on the log, but they have had a say in who will win the trophy.

In the biggest upset of the season, the Motherwell outfit, 14th on the log, edged out neighbours and title contenders, Subs, 3-2 at the NU2 Stadium in Motherwell. Subs went into the break leading 1-0 with a goal by Ludwe Sonjica. After the break, Sonjica completed his brace, but Stars struck three times to emerge as unlikely winners.

Subs now drop to third place, their lowest placing since the season started in September. They went into the Christmas break with a five-point lead at the top of the log, but since then they have picked up just five points out of a possible 15 and trail Callies by five points and Lion City by one.

Callies, who became the log leaders for the first time a fortnight ago, beat Fairview Rovers 1-0 in a keenly contested match at the Saints field. The logleaders had a player sent off midway through the first half. With both teams missing easy chances, a goalless first half was a fair reflection of the match.

Early in the second half, Shaniel Benn was brought down in the area and Emmanuel Hendricks made no mistake from the spot for the only goal of the match.

In a repeat of the first half, both teams were guilty of not taking their chances. Late in the game, Rovers were also reduced to 10 players following a red card. City moved into second spot following a close 1-0 win over Central Acemates at Kemsley Park.

After a goalless first half, it took a brilliant header by Tulani Motloung late in the game to give City full points. At Walmer High, Peace United twice came from behind to draw 2-2 with Showvillage United.

Alanai Kalamani and Mzwandile Ngqishi scored on either side of the break for Peace.

In the Uitenhage derby, Despatch Pioneers thrashed Island City 4-0.

Hotspurs forfeited their points when they arrived late for their match against Royal Bucks at the NU9 Stadium in Motherwell.
