Playoffs loom for zonal, regional cricketers

WHILE there are still some matches to be played, the pressure is beginning to rise as the Coca-Cola Schools Twenty20 cricket competition reaches its zonal and regional playoffs.

Last week, Masipathisane (Townships) and Grey High (PE City) qualified as their respective zonal champions and now they will be looking to push further ahead in the competition.

Masipathisane overcame Loyiso in the Townships final last week, scoring a handy 129 in their innings and then rolling over their opponents for 75.

They are now due to play David Livingstone in a regional final, although the date and venue for this match must still be confirmed.

Grey, meanwhile, will be looking to bounce back from a bad loss to Bloemfontein rivals Grey College at the weekend when they were dismissed for 63 to lose by nine wickets.

Last week, Grey showed their strength when they outclassed Framesby in the PE City final and they will be aiming for a repeat performance against Humansdorp region champions Nico Malan at Grey today.

Kingswood, meanwhile, have won the Grahamstown region after defeating St Andrew's, but are awaiting the completion of the Uitenhage region fixtures before playing their next game.

In the South Western Districts playoffs, the quarterfinals were played at the weekend, with last year's champions Langenhoven Gym reaching the semifinals.

They defeated Oakhill by 23 runs. The other quarterfinal results were: Glenwoodhouse beat Punt by 23 runs, Outeniqua beat Sentraal by nine wickets, Oakdale beat York High by eight wickets.
