Andile Lungisa granted leave to appeal assault conviction

The application for leave to appeal the conviction and sentencing of Nelson Mandela Bay ANC councillor Andile Lungisa was granted by the Eastern Cape High Court, in Makhanda (formerly Grahamstown).
The decision was taken on August 2.
Lungisa, who is out on bail pending the outcome of his appeal application, was convicted of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
He was sentenced to an effective two years imprisonment in April.
Lungisa’s attorney Alwyn Griebenow said on Tuesday: “The application has been granted for both the conviction and appeal.
“We are now waiting to get a date from the high court to hear the appeal”.
Lungisa was sentenced to two years direct imprisonment earlier this year for the attack on DA councillor Rano Kayser during a heated council meeting in October 2016.
