Two children drown on farm dam

An inquest docket has been opened for investigation following the drowning of two girls on a farm dam in the Riebeeck East area.

The girls aged 6 and 7 years-old are believed to have been swimming in the dam when the tragic incident took place, on Sunday afternoon.

Another child who was with the two girls alerted an elder of the incident.

When the police arrived one child was already retrieved by a member of the community and  police divers recovered the second child.

Grahamstown Cluster Commander Brigadier David Kanuka said on Sunday that words could not express his condolences on the loss of the two young children.

"No amount of words can return these children to us. Parents and guardians are urged to keep a watchful eye on children as they are drawn to explore.Always ensure that minors are in the company of a responsible adult and that they are supervised to avoid unfortunate tragic incidents of this nature." Kanuka said.
