State wants maximum sentence for disgraced lawyer

The prosecution has called upon the court to impose the maximum sentence on disgraced attorney Michael Randell.

State advocate Wilhelm de Villiers said Randell, at age 63, was not too old to go to prison, as tennis ace Bob Hewitt proved on Tuesday.

De Villiers asked that no less than 15 years be imposed on Randell, who defrauded Greenwood Primary School out of more than R2.5-million while serving on the school's governing body between 1999 and 2006.

The court will deliver sentence at noon today.
