PE gangster gunned down like brother

NOT even two months after the , his younger brother has been gunned down in a suspected gang attack.

Sean “Naco” Berry, 30, was shot while standing outside his parents’ house in Barends Street, Salt Lake, at about 8.45pm on Sunday.

He died on the way to hospital.

Detectives confirmed that the matter was gang-related but could not say if the brothers’ deaths were linked.

Donovan, 47, was shot 31 times in the face and upper body in a Bethelsdorp street just after 9am on May 3. A second suspect was arrested at the weekend in connection with his murder.

The brothers are both believed to have been part of the Spot Bouwer gang. Detectives suspect Sean’s murder was linked to infighting between gang members.

Police spokesman Colonel Priscilla Naidu said three men – all wearing hoodies – opened fire on Sean and a friend as they stood outside his parents’ house.

“[Sean] Berry sustained multiple gunshots to his body while the other man, 34, was shot twice,” she said.

“Berry died while on the way to hospital. “The suspects fled on foot.”

Naidu said the survivor, whose name was not being released for his safety, was recovering at a Port Elizabeth hospital.

Police were investigating a case of murder and attempted murder. She said the gang task team had taken over the investigation.

The alleged triggerman in Donovan’s murder, Elgeswhin Goliath, 27, was arrested shortly after he was shot.

Goliath appeared in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court last month and will remain in custody until his next court appearance on July 14.

In another breakthrough in Donovan’s murder, a 20-year-old man appeared briefly in the same court yesterday for his alleged part in the killing.

The man, who police do not want named until an identification parade is held, was arrested by the gang task team at the weekend after a tip-off.

He will remain in custody until Thursday when he will appear in court again for a bail application.

Less than two weeks ago, , was killed when four gunmen posing as police officials forced open the back door of her Barberry Street home in Bethelsdorp.

Her home was directly across the road from the spot where Donovan was gunned down on the pavement. Aliya’s murder was linked to a suspected witness killing plot.

It is believed Aliya’s mother – who witnessed Donovan’s murder – may have been the target.

She survived unhurt but Aliya’s father, Edmund, 43, was shot while trying to fend off the attackers and is still receiving treatment at Livingstone Hospital.

Donovan had been arrested several times over the past few years. According to police, he was instrumental in ordering hits on rival gangsters. Police appealed to the community for assistance yesterday.

“All information reported to police will be treated as strictly confidential,” Naidu said.
