Former banned play rises again
Bay playwright to stage musical outlawed in ’77
A MUSICAL production banned during apartheid is being revived and will hit theatres in the Eastern Cape next month.
The musical, titled Give Us This Day and banned in 1977 for its part in fomenting the 1976 Soweto uprising, is based on the life of black consciousness militant Abram Onkgopotse Tiro.
Tiro was killed in 1974 by a parcel bomb in Botswana sent by the apartheid state.
The revived musical will premiere on April 29 at the St Stephen’s church hall in New Brighton.
It will then head to Grahamstown for the National Arts Festival in July.
Give Us This Day was first performed in 1975 in Port Elizabeth.
It was written by veteran Bay director and producer the Reverend Mzwandile Maqhina.
