Community protest over held leaders

FAMILY members of the five Chatty community leaders arrested last year for allegedly murdering two gang members protested outside the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Luvuyo Maneli, 40, Mphuthumi Maxhela, 34, Vukile Dyele, 37, Siyabulela Sibulo, 38, and Zolisile Mbolekwa, 53, were arrested in May after two members of the Big Nuz gang were beaten to death by residents. They had been suspected of the rape and murder of a Booysen Park woman.

Yesterday they appeared briefly in the magistrate's court, where their case was postponed. This angered their supporters, who demanded they be released on bail. -
