City firms told to cough up R142m

ELEVEN Nelson Mandela Bay companies embroiled in a legal battle with the National Energy Regulator of SA (Nersa) and the municipality over steep electricity tariffs have to cough up a total of R142-million owed to the city or their power will be disconnected.

However, the high-energy users have turned to the Port Elizabeth High Court in a bid to stop the municipality from tampering with their power supply, saying the metro had to await the outcome of a separate case in the Pretoria High Court.

In November, the municipality issued notices to 11 of the 13 companies involved in the legal battle against Nersa, the municipality and the Energy Department to pay up as they had only been paying 76% of their electricity bills since July last year.
