Motherwell hip-hop festival is back again
THE Grassroots Arts Festival gives artists the platform to be artists and not mind the stereotypical red tape that confines artistry in the name of undefined professionalism. This platform that they are given also gives them a chance to grow in the genre of hip-hop.
This three-day event was started by Yahkeem Ben Israel in 2010, after touring South Africa with the purpose of setting up a national stage in the marginalised Eastern Cape to acknowledge the quality of crafts in the province.
"This event is held in Motherwell because it seeks to break the stereotype that for an event to be successful and reputable, it has to be outside the township," Israel said.
"This event is meant to motivate and inspire township people. Beyond everything else it is to create a trading space in the midst of the people, adding value in their lives.
"The first day is set aside for an industry-related/ entrepreneurial workshop.
"On day two, is a lyrical marathon with 20 hip-hop acts going head-to-head.
"Day three is dedicated to poetry and live music. The most exciting feature of the day is the beat battle where rappers compete to win some of the beats made the day before."
Grassroots Arts Festival is an original concept that has been taking place in Port Elizabeth, this event has operated successfully in the past without any help from government entities.
Fashion designers, hip-hop artist, performers, hip-hop dancers and people who want to run food stalls during the festival are all welcome to come through.
