Kitchen Maestro launches with food truck fun

Let's get trucking! The popular Walmer Park Kitchen Maestro competition, in association with Weekend Post, will be launching today at 11am with an exciting Food Truck v The Kitchen cook-off in the Centre Court area of the shopping centre.

The competition launch will see three local food truck owners showcase their talents against three past winners of the competition, before this year’s competition kicks off in earnest next weekend.

In the Food Truck corner will be chef Dewald Hurter, owner of Makoy Food Truck, Flair Catering and the newly opened The Kitchen in Main Road, Walmer. He will be joined by Janey Nortje, owner of Ground Floor Café in Stanley Street, and Craig Williams, owner of food truck Urban Eats.

The past Kitchen Maestro winners who’ll be cooking, will be 2013 winner, Martinette Magnee, from Port Elizabeth; 2015 winner, Dallas Land, from Jeffreys Bay and last year’s winner, Caitlin Botha, a Victoria High School matric pupil.

Each cook will demonstrate their individual skill and interpretation of street food with a gourmet twist.

Thereafter, on the Saturdays of July 15, 22 and 29, Walmer Park will a have weekly cook-off competition round that will see six home cooks being challenged by this year’s Kitchen Maestro theme: “Street Food Meets the Kitchen”.

The top two home cooks from each of the three cook-off rounds will move on to the semifinals, the Le Creuset challenge, to be held on Saturday August 5. The top two from the Le Creuset challenge will then proceed to the final cook-off on Sunday August 6.

All cook-off rounds will start at 11am.

Get ready to enter Cook-off 1 taking place next Saturday July 15, where you’ll have the chance to show off your culinary skills in the hope of becoming the next Walmer Park Kitchen Maestro.

There are some super prizes up for grabs from sponsors Rafi’s Appliances, together with Swiss Appliances, Le Creuset, Cerebos Salt, Ultimate Stylists, The Rocket Seed, John Dory’s, Two Oceans Wines, All Weather Friend, Fogarty’s Bookshop, Dulce Café, Home Etc and Tefal.

Simply collect an entry form at the information kiosk at Walmer Park or visit www.walmerparkshoppingcentre.co.za and follow the link to the Kitchen Maestro page to download the entry form.

Completed entries must either be e-mailed to dbloem@growthpoint.co.za or hand delivered to the info kiosk at Walmer Park by 12pm on the Wednesday prior to each Saturday cook-off.

Six entrants will be chosen for each week’s live cook-off and contacted telephonically to confirm their participation.
