Eastern Cape darts teams on target

Eastern Cape darts players were on top of their game again as they claimed two medals at the South African National Darts Championships held in Johannesburg recently.
The competition, which featured interprovincial, inter-association and inter-district competitions, saw some of the best darts players from around the country descend on the Klipriviersberg Recreation Centre to do battle for national honours.
Ibhayi Darts Association showed their class as the men’s team walked away with the gold medal in their section after winning nine games and losing one on a tie-breaker.
In the women’s section, the Ibhayi players finished second, after winning eight of their matches and losing one before winning one on a tie-breaker.
In the interprovincial competition, the Eastern Cape Province darts men finished third in their section after narrowly missing out thanks to aggregate score.
The women finished fifth in their section, having won three of the eight games in which they competed.
In the inter-district tournament, no EP team made it to the final.
Eastern Cape Province Darts Federation president Deon Oliver said: “Since we have begun this project, both our men’s and women’s teams have performed well, showcasing their talents.
“As a reward for this performance, both association teams have been promoted to a higher section.
“We have shown that we can compete with the best in the country. Some of our guys have already started planning for next year, so the future of darts in this region looks promising.”
Asked what was next on the cards for the association, he said an Eastern Cape Province Darts Federation inter-district championships would be held at the Katberg hotel later this year.
Oliver said Christo Meiring was selected for the South African team to compete at the Darts World Cup next year.
