Pearson to host cricket festival

16 school teams to play in three-day tournament

Pearson High will host the ninth annual Pam Golding Properties Cricket Festival, starting on Thursday. A total of 16 teams from some of the top cricketing schools from the Eastern Cape will do battle.

Twelve teams will play in Twenty20 matches on Thursday, while the hosts will have their work cut out as they take on Hudson Park in a 50-overs match.

Other games to look out for on day one will see Grey High against Muir College and Framesby against Daniel Pienaar in T20 matches.

On Friday, the teams will play a declaration format match which will allow teams to have the chance of batting twice. The day promises to deliver excellent cricket as there are some exciting match-ups on the programme.

On the final day, the teams will play in 50-overs matches before returning home.

Pearson will play Graeme College at their Summerstrand campus, while the Grey-Daniel Pienaar contest promises to be an exciting one.

The festival provides teams the opportunity to prepare for their upcoming league season and also to fill the gap between the winter season and the start of the new cricket season.

Pearson principal Andre van Staden said they were excited to host the popular festival again.

“Pearson’s annual festival is a fantastic opportunity for our top cricketing schools to kick-start the new season in fine style,” he said.

“We appreciate the support of our visiting teams and look forward to brilliant cricket. Most importantly, we hope the boys will have fun and make sure to build new friendships.”

The teams taking part are: Pearson, Pearson 2nd, Victoria Park, Westering, St Dominic’s Priory, Alexander Road, Framesby, Marlow, Union High, Grey High, Woodridge, Hudson Park, Daniel Pienaar, Graeme, Muir and Otto du Plessis. The opening day’s fixtures are:

50 overs: Pearson v Hudson Park (Pearson) T20s (AM): Framesby v Alexander Road (Framesby), Daniel Pienaar v Marlow (Daniel Pienaar), Victoria Park v Union High (VP), Muir College v St Dominic’s (Muir)

T20s (PM): Pearson 2nd XI vs Alexander Road (Pearson), Framesby v Daniel Pienaar (Framesby), Grey v Muir College (Old Grey), VP v St Dominic’s (VP), Woodridge v Union (Woodridge), Westering v Marlow (Westering)

  • Meanwhile, the Pearson High first team showed good form against Union High in Graaff-Reinet at the weekend.
In overcast, rainy conditions, the declaration match was reduced to a 45-35 overs split.

Pearson did not waste any time as they batted at a healthy run-rate, led by captain Daniel Doyle with 62 off 65 balls.

He was well supported by opener David Bosch (45) and a quick-fire 36 off 31 balls by Raeez Harrison in their score of 245/8 in 45 overs.

The Pearson bowlers put Union under pressure as they picked up wickets at regular intervals.

Doyle, with 3/15 in four overs, also led the way with the ball as the match grew tense with Pearson having 19 balls to dismiss the last batsman.

Union managed to hold on for a draw, ending at 119/9. Harrison and Rodwill Baatjies both picked up two wickets.
