VP score triple derby victories

VICTORIA Park withstood some spirited opposition in their netball and hockey derbies against Westering last week to emerge with some close wins.

The first two quarters of the netball match were closely contested, but VP took control in the third quarter.

Westering came back in the last quarter, but could not make up the leeway as VP held on for a 31-25 win.

The boys' hockey teams produced some excellent play, with VP finally edging their rivals 2-1. It was a match which neither side deserved to lose, but the strikes by VP's Avuyile Mayekiso and Kyle Hodgekinson proved the difference in the end.

VP made an explosive start to the girls' hockey match, maintaining good intensity at the start. That resulted in Nicky Veto scoring a phenomenal rebound goal to put them in the lead after two minutes.

VP continued to press forward and dominated much of the first half, scoring their second goal from a well-worked penalty corner, which saw Courtney Every slotting the ball into the net.

In the second half, Westering came back strongly and showed they were not willing to go down without a fight.

With about 10 minutes to go, Westering managed to gain possession just outside the VP circle and narrowed the gap to 2-1.

But in a tense finish to the game, VP held their ground to emerge 2-1 victors.
