Uitenhage football tournament gathering steam
THE battle for the winner's cheque of R15000 in the inaugural VW Polo Uitenhage Football Easter tournament continues at the Jabavu Soccer Stadium and the Jabavu Rugby Stadium this evening.
In a first for Nelson Mandela Bay, two Local Football Associations, Nodefa and Larofa, have joined forces to stage the tournament, which started last week and ends with the finals on Monday. Thirty-two teams are competing in eight groups of four in a round robin.
The winners in each group will advance to the knockout stage.
The winners will pocket R15000, a floating trophy, medals and a set of jerseys. The runners- up will receive R7000, medals and a set of jerseys.
The teams finishing third and fourth will receive R3000 and R1500 respectively and a set of jerseys each.
There will also be six special awards of R250 each in the last 16 stage. These include player of the tournament, best goalkeeper and best referee.
In the Nodefa VW Community Trust, Premier League New City Stars thumped Young Cosmos 4-0.
