Kimfley's spectacular goal

THE opening round of the EP men's premier hockey league at the weekend threw up several interesting results, with a fine win for Pirates and draws for NMMU and Gelvan Hurricanes.

Pirates have rarely troubled the top teams in recent seasons but their 4-1 result over Mecer NMMU B was a notable effort.

Pirates have made some good signings this season, Chester Scott being one of them, and they could surprise many teams with their quality.

Playing on the sand-based astro at Westering, Pirates constructed two very good goals to set up the win.

Gelvan Hurricanes let a 2-0 lead slip as Old Grey fought back in their clash to draw 3-3.

Old Grey became stronger as the half went on and pulled a goal back just before half time.

Lakeside Cavaliers, boosted by new signings such as former SA player Darren Kimfley and SA under-21 star Michael Abrahams, drew 4-4 with Mecer Madibaz. Abrahams scored the goal of the game after a solid run from just inside the attacking half to finish with a high back stick.

Madibaz took the lead but Cavaliers fought back to lead 2-1 at half time. They went 3-1 up before Madibaz staged levelled at 3-3.

Kimfley then hit a trademark back stick to put Cavaliers 4-3 up with seven minutes to play, but Jason Maclachlan scored for the varsity side to level the scores with three minutes remaining.
