Controversies rock Motsepe league

THE non-arrival of a referee caused Port Elizabeth football side Highbury to drop to fifth position on the Eastern Cape ABC Motsepe League log standings at the weekend.

Highbury were scheduled to face Mtata Milan in Idutywa, but, according to a league report, the assigned referee had no transport.

Highbury were third on the log on 32 points, with only goal difference between them and the top two.

Now, Highbury coach Garth Dickinson says the gap is wider.

"We will have to do a catch-up because the game against Milan will be rescheduled." Dickinson said the club had submitted a complaint to the Safa national office.

Meanwhile, fellow Motsepe League team Real City, of Motherwell, have complained about the standard of refereeing after their 2-2 draw against Champion in Lusikisiki on Saturday. Coach Bonke Namba said the players would need to stay focused because "being sabotaged by the referees" affected them.

In another controversy, Morning Stars believe that Safa should investigate age-related cheating within the Eastern Cape Motsepe League.

Stars' coach Siyabulela Isaac said some league teams were fielding older players against the young Kwazakhele squad. - Mthetho Ndoni
