David Livingstone beat St Thomas

DAVID Livingstone retained the Bethelsdorp Schools Twenty20 tournament cricket title with a convincing win over St Thomas in yesterday's final at Gelvandale Cricket Club.

Batting first, Livingstone totalled 106 and then ran through the St Thomas top-order to eventually restrict them to 84/9.

It was only an excellent face-saving innings of 42 not out by Romario Baartman which saw St Thomas get anywhere close to their opponents' total.

Livingstone produced a tight performance in the field through opening bowlers Lyle Jacobs (four wickets) and Vernon Campher (two wickets) as they scythed through the St Thomas top order.

They were assisted by some excellent fielding as the Livingstone lads seized every opportunity that came their way. There were several fine catches in the outfield, plus a run out.

Earlier, Severiano Martin (38) and Jacobs (25) played key roles with the bat for Livingstone but they, too, struggled up front.

Spinner Sean Whiteboy opened the bowling for St Thomas and, running into a breeze, he was not scared to give the ball some air. His excellent control of flight confused the Livingstone top order and saw him bowl three batsmen as they struggled to 27/4.

But Severiano kept the scoreboard ticking over and Jacobs hit some lusty blows lower down the order to help them get past the three-figure mark.
