Councillor rapped for hate speech

TEMPERS flared during a Nelson Mandela Bay council meeting yesterday when the city's political head of infrastructure and engineering said he would pray for the DA to be punished by God.

What started out as political banter between the parties in the council over the DA's surprise support of the 2014-15 Draft Budget and Integrated Development Plan, quickly became heated when councillor Andile Mfunda resorted to hate speech.

After criticising the DA for never agreeing with the budget in the past, Mfunda said: "I will pray tonight that God must punish the DA before judgment day."

Speaker Maria Hermans, who was distracted at the time, did not hear Mfunda's remarks and asked him if he had cursed the DA. - Rochelle de Kock
