A YOUNG Port Elizabeth hockey player has dreams of achieving national colours after she was selected to represent Eastern Province at an under21 inter-provincial tournament in Bloemfontein next month.

Kerryn Frost, 16, was chosen after a season full of highlights, which saw her achieve some of her best career moments as a hockey player.

The tournament, which takes place from April 20-25, will see South Africa’s top female hockey players battle for national honours.

Frost, a goalkeeper, started out as an outfield player between 2005 and 2008 before making the switch in 2009.

“My coach [Jacinta Reid] had a shortage of goalkeepers and asked me to try it out. She took me under her wing, coaching and encouraging me tirelessly,” she recalled.

Frost says she spends all her free time practising as she is always looking to improve her game.

“I am passionate about hockey and I always want to improve so I can deliver my “A” game.”

She played for Westering Primary’s U13A for three years and was chosen to play for the Eastern Province U13A in 2011.

When she moved over to Westering High, she only continued her rise to success as she starred for their U14 team for a year before being selected to the school’s first team, where she has been playing for the last three years under the guidance of Nicole Kemp and later on Chad Cairncross.

Frost also takes her academic studies very seriously: “I hope to study physiotherapy once I matriculate, but hockey is definitely my passion.”
