MUIR enjoyed a highly successful start at the Cape Youth Festival in Port Elizabeth last week, winning all four of their matches.
Mlibo Jamjam took two early wickets and Bergvliet eventually made 182 in 66 overs.
The Muir attack applied plenty of pressure on their opponents, with Yomi Keswa (2/30), Zinzo Dondashe (2/20) and Branem Adams (4/32) doing the rest of the damage.
In reply, Muir got off to the perfect start, with openers Ethan Bermosky and Lylle Petersen scoring freely and racing to 50 in seven overs.
With 30 runs needed, Petersen scored a flurry of boundaries to reach his century off 115 balls. Bermosky then went to his second half-century in two games, finishing on 59, while Petersen made 108 off 122 balls as Muir went on to win by 10 wickets.
Their partnership of 183 runs broke a 51-year-old Muir record held by Arthur Rudman and David Hayes, who shared an opening stand of 176 in 1962.
Against United, Muir scored a comfortable win by 167 runs after batting first and making 230.
Despite losing the in-form Petersen early on, Dumi Magala (40), Michael Manefeldt (29) and Jamjam (62) ensured a decent score for Muir.
Magala and Petersen produced a fine opening spell to have United in trouble at 36/4 after nine overs. Then Magala (5/20) and Petersen (3/34) helped to dismiss them for 67.
In their third game, against Westerford, Muir put themselves under pressure, losing wickets regularly to be dismissed for just 118. Magala (22), Siyamthanda Gqibitole (20) and Adams (20) were the main run-scorers.
Muir, however, came up trumps with the ball, and Jamjam (3/30) and Adams (3/4) led the way as Westerford tumbled to 87 all out.
In their final match, against Pinelands, Muir made a shaky start before Gqibitole (51 off 44 balls) and a cameo from Jamjam (25 of 12 balls) helped them reach 157/8 in 20 overs.
Pinelands started well, but Muir kept up the pressure to restrict them to 142/7. Zinzo Dondashe, Jamjam and Adams each took two wickets.
GRAEME College showed excellent early season form in the Cape Youth Festival. Solid batting and accurate bowling ensured three victories and a draw against the visiting teams from Cape Town. Lukhanyo Tshongweni (100 not out) and Odwa Xonxa (104 not out) scored maiden centuries against Bergvliet and Pinelands respectively. Other batsmen to catch the eye were Siphosethu Pinini and Keenan Vieira.
Garvin Dampies bowled superbly to claim 4/12 against United and 4/21 against Bergvliet.
