IN reply to "Fingerprints do not lie" (October 7), in 2001 my daughter applied for police clearance, a procedure based on the applicant's fingerprints. SAPS issued a certificate that she had three convictions but under another name, that of a man.

Two, in 1991, were for "housebreaking into a hotel" (in Lindley) and for "assault with fist and knee" (in Warden), for both of which offences this male criminal received suspended sentences. In 1994 there was a third conviction, this time for "driving a motor vehicle whilst under the influence of intoxicating liquor" in Kimberley, again resulting in a suspended sentence.

At the time of these offences my daughter was 13 years old and in boarding school in Uitenhage. Fingerprints may not lie, but they are only as accurate as the people interpreting them!
