I HAVE been to SARS to collect a tax clearance certificate to update my details as a sole trading supplier on the municipality’s database. I had no problems doing this during the past decade, as my tax was always paid without fail. However after completing the required forms and handing them in at the municipality, I was told the sentence, “trading as . . ”, should appear on my tax certificate. I returned to SARS to have this clarified. The official informed me that small traders like myself as individual taxpayers and those who did not qualify for VAT and PAYE did not have the sentence “trading as . . .” printed on the tax clearance form any longer.

Now, why all the confusion in that the officials at the municipality were not informed? Or were they informed? The women at the municipality and at SARS were such polite and well mannered individuals who were only doing what they were supposed to do every day. My question is: who’s right and who’s wrong? Is it SARS or the municipality at fault?
