Police are investigating an alleged arson attack at Rhodes University after two fires were started at the institutions main administration building.

Rhodes spokesperson Catherine Diener confirmed the incident had happened at the south entrance of the council chamber.

The incident is believed have happened at approximately 6:45am shortly after the building was unlocked for the day by a member of the Campus Protection Unit (CPU).

A CPU guard noticed the smell and extinguished it before significant damage was done.

Diener confirmed that police were on site and an investigation was underway.
