Discomfort levels in Port Elizabeth were classified under the “Extremely Uncomfortable” level category today and are approaching the “Hazardous to Health” level.

This according to Weather SA Eastern Cape spokesman Garth Sampson, who said it was advisable to cancel all school sports and cease strenuous outdoor activity.

“The wind direction in Port Elizabeth has once again changed and increased the temperature to 37°C, with a discomfort level of 107, which is ‘Extremely Uncomfortable’. It is approaching the ‘Hazardous to Health’ level.”

According to Sampson certain areas of the metro were as highly likely to have reached this level already.

He advised that the following precautions be taken:

  • Stay indoors in a cool room near a fan if possible;
  • The old and infirm must take extra care;
  • Listen to the radio or TV for weather warnings;
  • Cease strenuous outdoor activity if advised;
  • Avoid playing sport;
  • Dress in lightweight clothes and;
  • Drink plenty of liquids, but  NOT alcohol.
