Lawyer tells of former tennis star’s reaction after guilty verdict in child sex cases

SHOCKED former international tennis star Bob Hewitt, who may face life imprisonment after he was convicted yesterday on two rape charges and one of indecent assault, is strongly considering an appeal against the verdicts.

This is according to the Addo man’s Port Elizabeth attorney, Alwyn Griebenow, who last night described his 75-year-old client’s reaction to the verdicts as “shocked”.

Hewitt has been granted bail of R10 000. He is expected to appear in court for sentencing on April 17.

In what his detractors yesterday described as a victory against the abuse of children and a successful demonstration that there is no time limit to the prosecution of major crimes, Hewitt was convicted of the sexual abuse of three of his former tennis students in the 1980s and ’90s.
