With an increasing cost of living, workers in Nelson Mandela Bay want a national minimum wage of at least R7 000 a month.
Proposals tabled at a parliamentary labour committee hearing in Port Elizabeth yesterday varied between a national minimum of R5 000 and R12 500.
But the majority of those who attended – mostly government employees, volunteers and union representatives – said a minimum of R7 000 would go a long way to providing a better living.
A municipal councillor’s assistant shocked the Nangoza Jebe Hall when she said her work deserved nothing less than R20 000 a month.
