THE tragic deaths of their daughters has resulted in an unlikely friendship between Barry and June Steenkamp and the father of a Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University student who was murdered in her Summerstrand room in 2011.
The Steenkamps' daughter, former Port Elizabeth model Reeva, 29, was shot dead by Paralympian Oscar Pistorius in his Pretoria home on Valentine's Day last year.
Yesterday, Freddie Sithole, 46, of Soshanguve in Pretoria, spoke of the assistance he has received from the Steenkamp family while he is in Port Elizabeth.
"They are compassionate, warm and loving people, and they have opened their hearts to me," he said.
"When we met, it was as if we had always known each other. There was an immediate bond which I know will continue long after both our cases have been finalised." - Lee-Anne Butler
