THE Eastern Cape has been ranked fourth among provinces in terms of the incidence of identity theft.

Figures released by the South African Fraud Prevention Service (SAFPS) indicate that 6% of the 1370 cases reported nationally between January and April this year occurred in the province.

Identity theft occurs when criminals steal personal details and information including identity document numbers and bank details – either physically or via the internet – to commit fraud.

The two most common methods are e-mail phishing scams and card-skimming. - Gareth Wilson
