ALERT police officers in Helenvale arrested three men on Saturday with ties to a notorious gang in Port Elizabeth's northern areas.

Police spokesman Warrant Officer Alwin Labans said officers from the Gelvandale police station were performing routine patrols when they spotted a suspicious vehicle. "At about 8.30pm the patrol officers saw a BMW without number plates. They started following the vehicle and after a while ordered the driver to pull off the road."

As the officers approached the car they saw the man in the front passenger seat toss something out of the window and found a firearm next to the car. The officers then ordered the three occupants to step out so that they could search the vehicle.

"Inside the car they found another firearm. Further investigation also revealed that the car had been reported as stolen. All three occupants were arrested on the spot," Labans said.

The three suspects, aged 29, 32 and 36, are due to appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's Court today. - Riaan Marais
