THE Eastern Cape Education Department is pulling out all thestops to ensure a dramatically improved matric pass rate, pumping R120-million into an elaborate learning and teaching programme for schools.

With 138 days to go before the province's 68000 matrics sit for their final exams, MEC Mandla Makupula will launch the Matric Countdown Support Programme in Fort Beaufort tomorrow.

The programme will see live streaming of maths and language lessons from the University of Stellenbosch, holiday classes for all schools and extra weekend tuition for those that under-performed last year.

Principals at the under-performing schools will receive mentoring and coaching to help boost their performance. - Zandile Mbabela
