WHEN the rest of the community is fast asleep in the bitter cold, a Uitenhage woman who fosters children and takes care of those less fortunate, hands out blankets at 2.30am on weekends to the homeless people in town.

Alida Davis, crowned The Herald GM Citizen of the Year in November last year, said taking care of those who had nothing was her life's calling.

Davis and a team of friends went around Uitenhage at the weekend in search of people sleeping on the street.

She said she knew almost every homeless person by name.

"I know exactly where they sleep. I know their stories, I know their suffering and knew that I wouldn't find them any earlier than 2.30am. Between the Rotary Club, the Lions and individuals in the community, we managed to deliver 86 blankets to them."

With the blankets Davis gave each of them warm clothing and invited them to her regular soup kitchens.

"I've been doing this ministry in Uitenhage for the last eight years. People here are poor and hungry and I challenge anyone with a heart to help make a difference in their lives," Davis said.- Alvené du Plessis
