IT started out as a gang break-in alert but turned out to be nothing more diabolical than a couple of dagga rokers in the roof at a Port Elizabeth school yesterday.

Staff and pupils at De Vos Malan Primary School in Schauderville were evacuated from the premises shortly after 10am when a teacher, concerned about gang activity, reported hearing footsteps of what she thought were burglars in the school's roof. But, as it turned out, they were no gangland burglars – simply two former pupils smoking dagga.

The teacher, who asked not be named, said she was initially scared in the light of all of the gang violence in Port Elizabeth's northern areas, but realised it was simply "two idiots smoking dagga" after police removed the culprits from the roof just before 11am. - Tremaine van Aardt
