THE police's Commercial Crimes Unit in Johannesburg is investigating the alleged disappearance of more than R140-million from the coffers of the SA Municipal Workers' Union.

The move could further embarrass Samwu and ultimately its troubled mother body, Cosatu.

The alleged embezzlement of funds was also cited in a draft audit report by Pele-Ea-Pele, which also exposed questionable decisions by union leadership relating to the awarding of a tender for its new headquarters.

Union members opened a case of fraud against their leaders at Johannesburg central police station a week ago. Warrant-Officer Lorraine van Emmerick confirmed the case, saying investigations were under way.
