MATRIC pupils who rewrote their final exams made the best of their second chance, with their results pushing the country's overall matric pass rate to a record 80%.
However, the Eastern Cape, despite a 2.1 percentage point increase, still lags behind its provincial counterparts and remains bottom of the 2013 class with an improved 67%.
The supplementary exam results, released by Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga yesterday, also saw the Free State – which was named the top achieving province when the initial results were released in January – toppled by its then runner-up North West, which yielded an overall 89% from the initial 87%.
