ORGANISED business leaders in Nelson Mandela Bay are set to make an impassioned plea to President Jacob Zuma next week to intervene in a stalemate between 13 of the city's biggest companies and the National Energy Regulator of SA (Nersa) over high electricity tariffs.

The high-energy users – joined by the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber as a 14th applicant in the legal battle against Nersa, the municipality and the Energy Department – want the government to develop a national strategy on electricity.

Autocast SA executive director David Mertens, who is also spokesman for the group, said there were about 2500 different electricity tariffs in the country. - Rochelle de Kock
